We know the climate is changing because that’s what climate models tell us. But what exactly is a climate model, and are they cutting-edge science or modelling madness? What is a climate model?

Climate models are systems of differential equations based on the basic laws of physics, fluid motion, and chemistry. To “run” a model, scientists divide the planet into a 3-dimensional grid, apply the basic equations, and evaluate the results.

In general terms, a climate model could be defined as a mathematical representation of the climate system based on physical, biological and chemical principles (Fig. 3.1). The equations derived from these laws are so complex that they must be solved A climate model ensemble is a collection of climate simulations, each representing different possible realizations of the climate system. Owing to the different approaches to modelling complex climate system processes, there are uncertainties in the model structure, and hence in the simulations from the climate models.

The uncertainty of the projections results both from the uncertainty of the climate modelling but also from the uncertainty of the economic and demographic evolution.
